I graduated from the course last year - time well spent!

In 1st/2nd year you study some fairly generic college engineering level Maths/Science/Computing - none of which should be too difficult if you have done maths/physics for the leaving cert or are anyway competent with computers. These modules are done alongside business and marketing modules in the Aungier Street Campus which give you a good background in economics / business if you havent studied them for your leaving cert

there is a manufacturing engineering module you do for 3 years which is pretty much the most technical part of the course.

There is a large focus on the design aspect of things, at least one of the 5 days a week will be spent in Mountjoy Square Campus, commonly involves sketching/making models/concept work. It pays to be artistic or good at making models in this part of the course.

There are also several 3D modelling/rendering softwares you will learn such as Solidworks, Rhino and Cinema4D - this usually takes place in 2nd/3rd year

In later years the course becomes more focused on large 3-4 month project work, (usually carried out in teams). the final year of the course is almost entirely dedicated to large team projects to design products/concepts and a large individual thesis project to develop a product and prototype of your own design.

Its certainly an enjoyable course to do if you want a decent grounding in engineering but wish to lean more towards the creative side of the industry.

Hi Original poster - heres my 5 cents worth:

Ive been there and done Dt001 some time ago

Its all good - if you want to do engineering course without the maths

If you ve got an interest in how things are made, want to design stuff but dont want the hard core maths that is associated with traditional Mech Engineering etc

The course isnt difficult - just alot of doggy dog work involved

Of our class of 40 Odd 20 something of us graduated - a little over half

Yes - i enjoyed the course most of the time but be warned

Out of the 20 graduates 2-3 of us at best work full time in the industry

The problem is too many grads from limerick, Maynooth, Ncad all competing for little or no Jobs.

Other points to note- if you dont like art / drawing / sketching this is not the course for you

The course is on three different campus - that are approx a 1 mile apart

Pm your friends detail if you want to discuss further

In my year it was almost a 50/50 split men/women - its one of the most gender even engineering style courses you can do - courses in DIT Bolton street are predominantly male otherwise.

Going into my final year and I love the course. Very very hard work though if you want to do well. Many sleepless nights by all my class and projects can end up being quite expensive. It covers a broad range from engineering to design to business which is good so if you lack in one area you can make it up in another. The lecturers are grat and really approachable.
