Getting a Sports Car though the NCT

    Hi All

I have a Turbo Charged Sports car that I need to get through the NCT in January. (yes I know its a long way off but I recon I'm going to have trouble with it)

Anyway the car is putting out 370bhp approx with.... A De-cat. As such it is quite loud. (which as we know is now going to be illegal)

So my plan is to get a High flow Race/Sports cat. this should kill 2 birds with 1 stone. (I hope)

Does anyone have any experience with Race Cats? I know I will defo need a remap and may lose BHP (probably 10bhp with a good high flow cat). Where did you buy them? did they cut emissions enough so as that your car passed the NCT? I know some lads in the UK use em to pass the MOT however their emission standards are lower than ours I think.

Again I know it miles away but I want this sorted well in advance so as to be given sufficient time to deal with any issues

    Cheers
    G.

    What type of car.

Sports de-cats can be ordered through most specialists and are expensive.

A re-map wont be necessary if your car is fueling properly though this will depend greatly on the car and what has been done to the car.

More details on all modifications and the model of car is needed to get an idea of what it will take to put it through an NCT.

Its a lancer Evo V running @ 1.5 bar with a set of 285 cams an uprated fuel pump and a 3 inch turbo cat back exhaust system. Using a ViPec ECU

Could you stick in a CAT just for the test? If you have the part it's a relatively easy job, generally just 4 bolts...

I could do that but that doesnt mean it will pass the test.

if the fueling is very high then it will fail the test

Plus ideally I would like a more permanent solution as opposed to just having a decat

I would recommend that you whack on the old system and try to get it passed, if it fails then take more action.
The sarky smart-assed response would be, "Why did you mod it beyond NCT parameters in the first place? It's not as if the gains from a de-cat are worth the money and hassle for a road car."

well ya see with thethe Turbo in a standard Evo V is set to boost to 1.0 bar. By increasing the boost pressure and adding more fuel (fuel pump) and additional 85bhp can be unlocked. (Evo V's are 285bhp standard)

however increasing boost pressure with a Catalytic converter will cause a back presure within the downpipe and back though the turbo. this back pressure can damage the turbo or engine. hence removing the cat solves this problem. It was a cheap solution at the time however now I wish I had just have apid the extra money for the Sports/Racing CAT

I understand how it all works, I fitted a 2nd hand CAT before I got mine passed (N/A Nissan).
I'm just saying you might have to bite the bullet on a de-tune to get it through and then you can tune it back up again.

    Ah Yes

I get what your saying now,
I think you mis understand me though. :o

Basially I want to leave the high flow cat in indefinatley and still have the additional power.

IE this is not just about the test, its a permanent thing.

Best bet is to stick back on the Cat. Bung for the exhaust if your

worried about the noise. half a bottle of Diptaine in the tank before

it goes in. Fingers crossed then.

if its any consolation, my Evo V passed NCT with the following mods :

full turbo back exhaust including downpipe, put in standard cat for test and cat back. (HKS hi-power silent system 2.75inch)
    walbro fuel pump
    uprated plugs
relocated induction kit with straight pipe to turbo
and ecutek remap with 1.6bar of boost.

the car had a few other mods but not engine related, ie. tein top links etc and lowering springs.

I hate the NCT. It tests "road worthiness" and some silly EU standards but tells you nothing about the actual condition of the car or any of the important parts. Had a friend with a Toyota Levin, passed the NCT, drove off he was 5 minutes from home when the clutch and gearbox went bang........ nothing but a money makin scam.

And I put my car throught the test and they found it had a dodgy wheel bearing, which it did! And A friend put his car though the test and they noted one of the directional tyres was on the wrong way.

The test isn't perfect, and no test will tell you that your car had a latent defect, but the NCT is better than nothing, especially considering how many people would let their cars go to ruin unless there was some kind of stick to beat them with.

OP: i'd be inclined to detune the car for the nct and undo the "damage" once you have the cert.

They're not going to autopsy the entire car in 20 mins for €50. Imho it's very good value for money.

OP, yes your car is post 1994 so you'll need a cat.
