Sure you could use this for any questions on vacant places, as it would be handy for people like me who will be keeping an eye on them.

Anyway, my questions, say if I see a course with a vacant spot tomorrow, and apply for it and get it, can I then apply for a vacant spot of a course on round two, which will then cancel out my original application for a vacant spot. Get what I mean?

Also, a fairly general question, but for people who have done the LC before or whatever, do many courses come up on the vacant places list? Anyone know if WIT or CIT use the vacant list often or in previous years?

can you apply for a vacant place if you've accepted an offer already?

  • Registered Users Posts: 187 ✭✭aisling.laura

Do you have to have already applied through cao this year to apply for a vacant place?

Or can anyone apply, regardless of whether they did the leaving this year or not?

    From CAO vacant places

    About Available Places/Vacant Places

If any places remain unfilled in particular courses after all offers have been made and the waiting lists of applicants meeting minimum entry requirements have been exhausted, such vacancies will be advertised.

Where there are Available Places/Vacant Places in specific courses, HEIs will advertise these on the CAO website. Before making an “Available Place/Vacant Place” application, those matching the description “Restricted Categories of Applicant” on Page 3 of the CAO handbook should first consult with the Admissions Office of the HEI concerned.

Persons who have not applied already may make an Available Place application on payment of a fee of €45.00.

Persons who have applied already (whether placed or not) may apply for an Available Place on-line without payment of a further fee (when available).

Applicants for Available Places/Vacant Places must meet the normal minimum entry requirements for the course(s) in question. Previously published points in an earlier round of offers should not be taken as an indication of the points required for entry to Available Places/Vacant Places.

Mature applicants and applicants who have qualifications other than 1985-2007 Irish Leaving Cert and/or 2000-2007 FETAC Level 5/6 are categorised as Non-Standard Applicants. Such applicants must contact the appropriate HEI before completing an application.

Lists will be available here from 12 noon tomorrow.

If you didn't get offered anything but are still hopeful of getting your 1st choice in Round 2, if you apply for a vacant course will that become your 1st choice???

Or will your 1st choice still over -rule it even if you apply for one of the vacant places???

    Confused!

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 29,509 Mod ✭✭✭✭randylonghorn

As far as I understand it (and I don't work for the CAO! :pac:) if you apply for / get offered / accept a vacant place, it will be just as if you accepted the offer you got in Round 1 ... i.e. if one of your higher preferences becomes available in Round 2 you will still get offered it.

I'd be 95% certain about that, but I haven't seen that particular scenario play out in real life, so can't be 100%.

Someone else may be able to confirm ... or when the Vacant Places facility re-opens tomorrow, they may give you more information about it as part of the "how to ..." instructions.

DO all the courses or at least most of them come up for the vacant spaces option today during round 1, or do more come up during round 2? What was it like in previous years?

  • Registered Users Posts: 853 ✭✭✭Idjit

well the vacant places service is meant to be open now but its still displaying that message about it being closed until...well...now...i wonder if its on automatic update or if they give it a few minutes before opening it while people flood on?

If i accept my first round offer can i apply then for a vacant place?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 29,509 Mod ✭✭✭✭randylonghorn

    Yes.

See post 6 above by the way.

Also, from CAO handbook (page 18):

Acceptance of an offer of an Available Place/Vacant Place course automatically cancels and supersedes any previous offer(s) and acceptance(s).

I would read this to mean that you can apply for a vacant place and still retain / accept your first round offer ... it is only if / when you are offered a vacant place (which is different from applying for one!) and accept that offer that your previous acceptance of your Round 1 offer is cancelled.

You should see some more certainly ... esp. after Round 2

Depends what you're looking for though ... taking it to the extreme for illustration purposes, Med in Trinity isn't likely to appear!

I was told by WIT in an email, that they have NEVER had any courses on the vacant list. I find that hard to believe, but has anyone ever seen courses on the vacant list for WIT?

I honestly don't know, I've never paid much attention to the vacancies list before this year.

I'd be somewhat dubious though ... unless it's WIT policy simply not to take applications in this way, but to simply run with smaller numbers in some courses if that's what they end up with?

I don't really understand what your saying there

But yeah, I dont get it, I never imagined WIT being THAT popular of a college that they have NEVER had any vacancies. Strange... im still hoping though.

Hes trying to say rather than get 5 extra students for a course, for example, that has room for 60 people and only has 55 accepted, they stick with the 55 as they dont want to kinda tarnish their reputation yeno?

Ah right, if thats the case, if emailing them, and implying this to them, and telling them what you got in the LC, and that you really want to get into the course, would they be able to offer a place just to me? Or is that against CAO rules or what?:o
