Ideally I'd like to be driving by next summer and wanted to get the theory test out of the way. The next steps involved presumably are applying for a provisional license and getting lessons?

In order to meet my self set deadline :P when should I go about doing these? Does there tend to be a delay in granting provisionals or being seen for a driving test?

Could I get it all done in the space of a couple of months or should I be doing all this sooner?

There's no real delay in getting a learner permit (which is what a provisional is now known as) - fill in the form, attach the necessary eyesight report, proof of passing the theory test and passport photos and it can be yours pretty much right away (literally, if you live in Cork (and maybe other locations?) as they'll hand the permit over to you over the counter).

After you get your learner permit there's a legal requirement to wait 6 months before sitting your driving test so you should get the permit organised as soon as possible to be honest as that'll be the biggest time hurdle in the way of getting your licence.

    Congrats !

next to apply for your provisional you need your theory test cert which should have being giving to you at the test center.

you will also need a driving eye test, 2 passport photos of you and a small fee in order to apply for your license.

you apply for your license at any county or city council tax office.

your provisional license has being changed to a learner permit and will last for 2 years And it can be renewed for another 2 years, if necessary.

once you receive your license (learner permit) you can then start your driving lessons with who ever you wish... please check if they are ADI approved.

always bring your license (leaner permit) with you for your lessons.
your instructor will check it the first time but bring it the next time you take your lessons ... just in case :)

then when feel ready take a pre-test or 2 if needed.

if all goes well apply for your full driving test here with your driver number, address etc. but please do wait 6 months before taking the test. i.e you can book the test in the 5th month and still be eligible to take the test.

the new fee for a full driving test is now €75 euro.

you can pick a driving center of your choice where you would like to take the driving test. each test has different waiting times.

when your test date is approaching the RSA will send you a letter approximately 8 weeks before your due to take your test.

then you need to be insured on a car and that the car is all clean and everything is in working order.. i found using an instructors car to be better as you are automatically insured etc.

then you pass your test, bring the paper work and a fee to a tax office and they post you your full driving license :)

a full driving license will last 10 years.

    enjoy :)

Ah ok, so I should get the learners permit sooner rather than later. There's no tight time policy on it or anything? Like if I were to get my learners permit now and not take lessons for about 9 months and the test in 12 months time, that'd wouldn't be a problem of any sort would I'd imagine?

    Thanks for the replies btw!

your leaner permit will last for 2 years from the date its published And it can be renewed for another 2 years, if necessary.

get it sooner rather than later but when booking your test make sure that your test dosent go past the license expiry date :)

(Psst - theres a thank you button on these posts... please use :))
