BIS isnt easy anyways! The programming can be tough at times but you get through it. One thing i will say is study for your exams! I just sat one of my repeats today and its not nice having to study during the summer!

One bit of advice, always go to your 9am lecture on a wedsnesday as the lecturer is a prick and always show up for coffee if you have it after!

If youve looked the timetables for BIS1 online, then add 6 hours of labs and anywhere from about 2-4 hours of tutorials!

Anything else youd like to know just post it!

Going into 2nd year now and I like it.Programming is hard but the lecturer is sound.Turn up to the classes, including the non-IS ones like accounting and stats.Labs are important for the IS classes so go to them.Turn up the stats practicals before Christmas too as it helps with the project in that.

Anyone you ask is gonna tell you it's a hard course. Projects during the year will make up about 30% of most of your exams, so don't treat them like they don't matter. Probably best not to leave them to the last minute either, although chances are your entire class will be trying to get a computer in the labs the entire week before any of your projects are due.
You will be expected to do a lot of the work yourself, particularly in the accounting modules. Not exactly the most understanding people.
If you're going to miss a lot of the lectures at least go to your labs and tutorials, very important. I would strongly advise that you go to all of you IS lectures at least. Some of them will notice, and they all take attendance. Some of the other lectureres will if too few turn up.

Did this course, and yes it can be tough, definetly go
to all the IS Lectures, and especially the early morning ones, they
definetly will rise suspicions if you dont go,

but if you work away through out the year , its more then managable.
dont leave projects til last min cos they are handy to make some nice progress in your overall mark before exam time,

programming can be tough, but everyone helps each other out, and the tutors
are usually pretty good to help out

and as far as exams go, if you do past papers and get them looked at it,
will really go far in getting a good result.

    on the other site
plenty of nights out to be had, plenty class parties
bis soccer, bis ball, and plenty of other stuff,

    enjoy!!

Going into 3rd year myself... Make sure you go to all the tutorials, you learn a lot from them especially the IS ones. other than that go to most of the is lectures and if not make sure you get a friend to sign you in! :D

im about to start BIS, just wondering if you need to be good at maths for it???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭Aodan83

Not really. Not in first year at least. Statistics is the only maths based subject, but it's fairly simople really once you understand the formulas. Most of them aren't really any more complicated than LC pass maths, just presented differently. Spend a bit of time at it and it's grand. Calculators make things a lot easier.

I did pass maths as well. More than likely that most of the class did really. As long as you put in the work you really can't go too far wrong.

I did management, but I should have done marketing.Exam at the end seems easier and you don't have to write an essay during the year.It was also a 2 hour class at 4 on a Tuesday, although marketing is on a friday morning which isn't nice.It doesn't particularly matter though so you could just flip a coin.

With the timetable, you can nearly double the hours with labs, practicals and tutorials thrown in.

Going into 1st year BIS aswell. I'd say I'm going to take Marketing, seems to be more useful to me.(although now people are probably going to tell me how good Management & Organisation are! :p)

We watched 10-15 minutes of The Office in management, but I'm not sure about the class' usefulness.
