You could probably apply this argument to film or even food.. Just enjoy the music you like, show it to others, if they like it, then good. If they don't, at least you can enjoy it and let them listen to what they like.

Who listens to the radio these days anyway when you can custom build a channel of the music that you like either through building playlists in ITunes or using sites like Spotify and Last.FM.

There is a much much richer much more diverse range available today than ever before if you are willing to scratch the surface and look beyond the mainstream media. The internet has allowed bands who might have struggled to get released with traditional labels to take control of their own destinies and carve out a niche for themselves.

For every Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk who sell out there are acts like The Field and Burial who continue to push boundaries. For every Kooks there is an Animal Collective. If you can take the time and effort to write an article like that surely you can take the time to find some decent music too. I usually spend an evening a week looking at Websites, Blogs and Forums for recommendations and seeking out new bands. The media as we know it is f**ked as there is a shift towards content created by the online community. You don’t have to accept mediocrity and for everyone that wants it there is a more than viable alternative to the mainstream.

mp3 blogs are a great way to find new music, as is any of the many newly cropping up web radio stations

    http://pitchfork.com/reviews/best/

Would be a good start. Pitchfork dont always get it right and they can be a bit up their own holes sometimes but there are some great albums in that list.
