Transport Twitters

    We've recently started using Twitter properly. We update it regularly throughout the show with news of how the traffic in Dublin is flowing and any accidents or incidents which cause delays.

    We're going to start using the #livedrive hashtag with the hope that listeners/tweeters can tweet how the traffic is moving when we're not on air so people can track traffic during the day, at night and at weekends and alert each other to any problems.

    Just a bit more info on how we intend to use Twitter:

    Our idea is to put "#livedrive" on all the tweets we send out containing traffic information so people who search for #livedrive on the twitter website, or using one of the various bits of twitter software can find our messages. To take this further listeners can tweet info themselves and this would become particularly handy when we're off air.

    For example if a listener is on the M50 southbound at 8pm and sees an accident they could tweet "accident M50 SB at Blanch, took me 15 mins to pass #livedrive" and people could avoid it. Another advantage of the hashtag is it means listeners can communicate with each other so someone could tweet "anyone out the n3? How's it moving? #livedrive" and then get responses from other users.

    Our Twitter use is still in it's infancy and we haven't really been promoting it much yet as we've been trying to figure out the best way to use it, but if we can get a decent number using the service it could be very handy for listeners.

    What do you think? Is there a demand for this? Is it feasible? Any advice on how to get people using it?

    Have a look on our twitter page to see how it's operating at the moment, we haven't had many listeners using it yet, but we're going to promote it heavily over the next few weeks

    Thanks

    How can people tweeting while driving be at all safe? :rolleyes:

    As we do with texting we tell people to only get in touch "When it is safe and legal to do so"

    After a six month gap, Dublin Bus are back twittering - is this a genuine account? They've been very active since Saturday, with 5-10 messages daily.

    It is not an official Dublin Bus site.

    It is definitely NOT a Dublin Bus account.

    It is completely bogus.

    Following Livedrive. Thanks!

    Any twitters specifically for Cork-Dublin commuters. I already follow AA but not resolute enough. Interested in commuter data ; live speedtraps, black ice etc

    1. the vast majority of commuters travel alone;
    2. very, very few drivers will pull in to text or tweet;
    3. even if you wanted to, clearways and bus lanes make it very difficult on most routes to pull over;
    so it's a reasonable assumption that virtually ALL contributors to LiveDrive are doing so when it is clearly unsafe and illegal to do so. Get real, folks, you're encouraging unsafe and illegal driving practises. (And you're supported by Dublin City Council in this?)

    No they don't. Half a million people use Dublin Bus every day.

    apologies Victor, you are correct. My point relates to motorists, most of whom travel alone when commuting to and from work, and the danger involved in texting while driving, even at relatively slow speeds.

    Who in their right mind would set up a twitter site that would purport to be an official transport site?

    Bizarre in the extreme!!

    Here's my own :D

    www.twitter.com/VanTasks

    Few and far between tweets on incidents as they happen, but I've tweeted a few incidents seconds after they happen so still might save you getting caught. Have seen most incidents I report to @aaroadwatch being retweeted by themselves maybe 20 minutes after, but they never give me a mention :(
