    Hi all,

I'm a journalist and I'm looking for information about people's experiences with Irish 'for-profit' volunteering companies.

I know i-to-i have an Irish branch in Waterford, so if anybody has been away with them, or any other Irish for-profit group, I'd love to hear from you.

You could pm me, or reply here and I'll get in contact with you. Your help is appreciated. Thanks very much.

I'm having trouble understanding what you are talking about...... people volunteer for profit.

I always thought that people volunteered for the charity in order to raise awareness/money to help a cause.

Basically, there are two ways you can volunteer.

You can do it with an NGO, which prioritises development in an under-privileged community in the third world, makes no profit, and all the available funds raised go into the host community.

Or there are groups who seek to recruit professionals who pay a fee and are sent away on a 'volunteering holiday', whereby there is an amount of volunteering done, but there is also an amount of holidaying, and an emphasis on making a profit for the company that sent the people out.

I'm still trying to get my head around it myself to be honest, which is why I'm looking for people's experiences here, but there is info about i-to-i here: http://www.i-to-i.com/volunteer-trips/

You will generally find the poeple who go with i-to-i (pardon the generalisation) are not short on cash, not willing to go into the unknown without support and very aware of the situation in which they're in (that they are paying when many others are not).
I know it's terrible to throw them in the one boat but I have met many abroad and they are mostly very happy with the service because it meets ther needs, none have ever mentioned the needs of the gourp they worked with abroad.

And so, if you're going for a 'they are the devil' angle here, I doubt you'll get it from ex-i-to-i people.

Thanks for the reply. No I'm not looking at any angle, or jumping to any conclusions like that, I'm simply looking for contact details of people who have been away on trips like this, so that I can get some idea of how they operate and what the experience is like. If you can be of any assistance in this regard, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again.
