    Hi All,

Just wondering what I should be looking for in an external harddrive. There sems to be a big difference in prices. I think my laptop is a bit dodge and I want to back up everything in case it needs to be replaced. It has a 60gig internal harddisk with a lot of music/avis/docs/jpgs.

Is it possible to get any kind of hard disk that will connect with a TV automatically to play avis etc? Although more likely to just buy a cheaper option. I've seen prices go from €65 - €400 but other than size not sure what the additional features are.

    Cheers,
    Kaz

Yes, you can buy external hard-drives that play videos. There's rakes of them with different capabilities and capacities.

Regarding pure hard-drives, you've two main choices - portable or desktop.

Portable drives are built using 2.5" laptop drives, and are usually USB powered (don't need a separate adaptor). They are more expensive per GB than desktop ones, usually at least 2x as expensive. And they are not available in such high capacites. (max 1TB at the moment, the just-released WD Passport).

Desktop drives are bigger/bulkier, and need a separate adaptor. They are much more affordable though - for example you can get a 1TB for €80 in komplett. link.

Ive a few of those WD Elements drives and they're grand. Good quality and well priced.

Edit - I just read that you only need to back up 60GB. LOL, just about any drive would do you then, that's a very small capacity by todays standards :pac:

Most of the time, the actual drives inside the different enclosures are basically identical. I always get the cheapest one I can find...
