heh, I've seen this a few times myself :)

I've always been tempted to set up a blank install, just so I can run spyware under Wine to see how it reacts.

I suppose if it doesn't run, I can always bug report it.

    Don't be too complacent;)
It's still quite possible for a virus/malware crap to infect *NIX people.

Rootkits are a more serious problem, so I would suggest people
at least run these two rootkit detection tools.

    Rkhunter
    Chkrootkit

I got 3 warnings, because some binaries in Slackware are
replaced by shell scripts. Not 100% perfect, but damm close.

ClamAV for Linux is the only antivirus I would use, and generally
only if it's a server passing files to windows clients.

    No one is safe...

How people actually belive these sites is beyond me though . They are always a pixelated image like the one above obviously fake, I've had to fix this problem many a time so many do fall for it :rolleyes:, not on unix systems though!

Plenty of people on earth exhibit the following traits:

1: They are ultra stupid or lack common sense.
    2: They are ignorant

There are exceptions as we all know, but the creationist jesus
wielding mother of 5 situated in southern alabama does not fancy
logic as a whole. Our Nigerian friends exploit these traits quite well.

Yeah.... I managed to get one of those damn fake-AV's on wine once thanks to a mistaken click in Ie6 (I installed it for the lulz). Was kind of funny to actually watch it sit there. Then chop it out.

That is actually pretty worrying though. Eventually Wine will get so good at bridging the gap between *nix and Windows that windows malware may well become a problem.... not to the epidemic standards, but it'll certainly be irritating.

Wine refuses to run as root though, which will at least curtail a lot of the issue.

PEBKAC. Look it up. No matter how secure the OS. if you can trick the user into entering the root password to install malware, no security (besides standing behind them with a baseball bat) will save them.

Using Ubuntu 9.04 and at various times, Firefox keeps trying to download "pdf.pdf" from www2.hydpersy.net. Not finding much info on google.

That *could* be a virus inside a firefox addon, or a javascript thing... If you got linked to the same answers.yahoo.com post as I did when I googled it... that guy was running windows and had the same thing.
