Hi - having a strange problem with the gears/accelerator of our 98 Ford Fiesta. The revs shoot up in between gear changes and when the car is put into neutral the revs shoot up again (without foot on accelerator) until I apply full pressure on the brakes. Any idea what is causing this? I've never experienced this before so I don't know if it means the clutch is going or if maybe the accelerator cable is being caught on something. I'd like to know what the most likely problem is before taking it to a garage. Hope someone can help.

Nothing to do with clutch anyway ;)

Seems to be a problem with the throttle position sensor on that generation Fiesta. Could also be a software issue. There doesn't seem to be one neat fix for it.

Presume its a 1.3? Its a lack of electrical contact between the Harness multi-plug and the Throttle position sensor. Common fault on them.

Idle air stabilisation valve on the side of the inlet manifold, remove it and clean it with carb cleaner if this doesnt cure it replace it with new or good second hand unit. These are a common failure on that model fiesta.

Any idea if it would be a costly repair?

Its got to do with the air intake system.

In my focus i had the same problem, turned out to be a collapsed vaccum hose on the inlet manifold.

However the other common problem is the Idle Air Control Valve. These go in fords common enough.

I dont being honest, im only involved in the sales side. I reckon if you bring it into a mechanic he'll set you right. ;)

Could be a number of reasons. Check for any cracked pipes.

Clean the trottle body and if still no joy. A diagnostic check should

tell you what fault or sensor needs replacing.
