Probably pointless asking such a questoin but ...

What is a reasonably safe bet for appreciation over the next 10 years say? Banks (if they survive the next year)? Green tech? Oil futures?

I was thinking I might buy some friends a few shares in something as a wedding gift, rather than hand over plain cash.

We would be talking about small change now ...

    Thanks.

Think about costs involved. I asume you want to give them share certificate. That is €80 minimum per transaction for you and extra €80 if your friends decide to sell those few shares.

Oh ... So I should buy them shares in a brokerage firm?

Usually you can not buy them anywhere else.

Why not buy them some gold instead...it could be a good investment over the long term.
