hi there, i have applied for this course through the cao, but i recieved a letter regarding an interview on the 27th of august, as i qualifty as a mature student.

im wondering if anyone here is doing this course, or know anyone doing it.
    is it hard?
i finished my leaving cert back in 2003, and havnt done anything work wise relating directly to this course.
its a career i want to pursue, but might not be the right course if its too dificult for someone who hasnt recently been in a science lab/classroom.

i also need to point out i did not do leaving cert science.

so, would it suit a begineer?
    any help would be great!

I think that could be a brand new course. I'm going into 3rd yr now. AFAIK we haven't had that course during my last 2 years here.

    I may be wrong!

i could be wrong here but a friend applied for it and was told it was theory only and no practical study which makes it obsolete in my book but i stand to be corrected.

hopefully its not all theory, as i dont wanna spend 4 years with my head in a book.

It's actually a brilliant course, I didn't do it but in First year, all the science classes are joint together where they learn the fundamentals of science in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I'm going into second year myself, but the lecturers do their absolute best to help you pull through and the maths can be a challenge (you're not allowed to use a calculator in first semester).

You won't regret doing it and i'm sure you'll fully enjoy it aswell. It's not all theory, there's 9 hours of lab work a week and the rest is theory but i'd recommend to write up the reports after the practicals. I did a last second job and it wasn't exactly the best decision.

Don't worry about not working in a lab before because the first year is based on basics and getting you used to lab equipement.

Best of luck and feel free to ask me anymore questions

Hi, I'm 21 and going back to do the Health Science and Physiology course so I was a bit worried about being prepared too. Apparently first year is an introduction to science and lab work so it gets everyone up to the same speed.

A friend of mine is going into 3rd year in that course and he loves it. He wasn't particularily sciencey either.

    Good luck. :D

im doing it. going into 2nd year..
its brilliant. we do lots of theory, chemisty, biology and physics in 1st year.
its all very basic, like leaving cert, the biology goes a bit deeper tho'
you get to do basic forensic classes and a criminal law module.
there is a trip to the rifle range quite early aswell to do ballistics..
there is a good bit of practical work. labs 3 days a week. for chem biology and chemistry.
the maths is where everyone gets caught. but the lecturers are great in helping the mature students in my class. theres even a maths support every night in the college taught by the maths lecturers, where you can get help with anything you need... it sligo is a great place to learn, its the perfect size, pity the canteen is ****e tho

Where would this course normally lead? A specialist in the Gardai or in the area of pathology or where?

    Sounds very interesting.
