I've been asked to look into the options for securing data on systems (mostly laptops) used by some of the staff.

I know Bitlocker could be used if we were using Vista/7, but for the moment we're still running XP. Ideally what I'd like is something that'll protect the entire drive, but which also supports an Administrator/Supervisor bypass password if they forget their own (not the most technical of users you see!).

    Any suggestions?

    try truecrypt or freeotfe

both are open source, so no license fee required for either.

for corporate I would suggest Safeboot/McAfee... great recovery capabilities for forgotten passwords etc.

Truecrypt all the way. Also if you create encrypted volumes (rather than the whole drive) you can put the .tc files on a USB stick and even use the same volume on Linux and Windows. Handy.
