She was raped in a minivan outside, and is suing the hotel over it

of course they're going to defend themselves

Disgusting that the hotel makes it sound that if she'd any common sense she could have prevented the attack.

Heaping a personal insult on a victim isn't on.

Thats it bycot Marriot hotels worldwide, what a digusting bunch:mad:

    Why?

We all know it's always 'her' fault...

The woman seemed to claim it was the hotel's fault, they have every right to defend themselves. Nobody to blame but the rapist, and he got 20 years.

In the words of David Brent............ "There's been a rape up there".

Many properties will place warnings about limited liability for vehicles in the lot.

I would definitely boycott the Marriot chain of hotels......if I had the money for a holiday in the first place :(

It's also disgusting that she'd try and tarnish the name of the hotel, when they had nothing to do with it.

The article doesn't give a lot of detail.

It could be that she was in the hotel's parking garage and that security was supposed to have been provided and wasn't.

Neither side has a particularly strong case, but you'd think the hotel would be more conscious of the PR that their handling of it might bring on.

It says it happened in the hotel's parking garage. If a garage is considered private property, more so than an open air car park, maybe there should have been more security? At the same time, she probably doesn't have a case against them.

Disgusting that the hotel's lawyers makes it sound that if she'd any common sense she could have prevented the attack.
Fixed that for you, and we have no idea what was really said in full, and in what context.
The article doesn't give a lot of detail.
Indeed, they often leave stuff out for the sake of sensationalism. The headline is totally misleading.

She's effectively trying to blackmail them. If it goes to court it doesn't do Marriott any good PR-wise.

That said, I'd say it's her lawyers that are pushing it. Worse than ambulance-chasers.

Probably for the best digigal. If you think a hotel is at blame because someone was raped outside it, then I thinking staying in your house for the rest of your days is for the best.

TBH i think the Marriott are totaly justified in defending themselves anyway they can. If she had fallen and maybe knocked herself unconsious due to they're negligance and then was raped then I'd agree with her suing them.

But with the few details that we have then I'd have to assume that she was there of her own free will and there was nothing that the marriott except for assigening a personel bodyguard to each customer could do.

If this woman succeeds with this then I think its a very sad day for bussiness owners everywhere!!!

A hotel statement from Friday suggesting that the original story in this thread had bandy legs on it.

Marriott International Inc. issued a statement Friday in the lawsuit over a 2006 rape case in which a woman, identified in court papers as Jane Doe, was assaulted at gunpoint in front of her children in the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa parking garage.

"We wish to convey our respect and sympathy for Ms. Doe and her family, who were the victims of a horrendous crime in 2006," the statement said.

It continued: "Marriott is profoundly sorry that such a terrible thing happened to the victim of this violent crime. And unfortunately this situation has created a mistaken impression that Marriott lacks respect and concern for Ms. Doe or other victims of violent crime.

"However, out of respect for the privacy of the victim and the expectations of the Court in the pending litigation, we are not at liberty to comment on the claims or defenses in this case."

Link and this opinion piece from the same source gives more detail.

I was at a Marriott outside boston and they had a 2 story car park (free for guests but it had no barriers so anyone could go in there), and for some reason the bottom part was called the garage because during winter you parked your car there to stop snow getting on it, just like the garage at home .... is that the type of garage they are talking about?

    i agree completely.

the hotel shouldn't have to take responsibility for normal everyday people walking by the hotel... if that was the case they would be broke and shut down

dont see why the hotel should take responsibility
