Can get 3G on my O2 broadband in my Gaff but only edge on my 02 phone!!!wtf

Is the phone set to 2G only, by any chance? Some phones don't tend to be as good, reception wise, as the modems, from what I've read.

what 2g signal are you getting on the mobile???

the phone probably uses the strongest in dual mode

if you need 3g maybe you have to set it too 3g only but remember to change it back

Are you trying to do a data connection on the N97 or are you only looking at the phone in idle mode?
