Casting

Hi guys and gals. Would you please post any drills or tips you may have to help prevent casting in the golf swing???

I am a single figure player but I am losing distance and getting inconsitent contact fairly regularly now. I can feel myself releasing just a fraction too early and end up with a high short trajectory if I still manage reasonable contact. Otherwise it's fat or thin.

Any drills I could try to help reduce the trouble would be appreciated!!

I've never heard the term casting before, but a quick google search found me this.
Casting is a premature release of the wrist caused by allowing the left shoulder (for right-handers) to lead the downswing.

There is an excellent drill to learn the proper position in the downswing. Place a ball on a tee and use a six or seven iron for this drill.

First get into a position of imitating your downswing. With your arms at an eight o'clock position, point the buttoned of the club at the ball(it may be easier to put a tee in the hole at the end of the grip and point that tee at the ball). This is an imitation of your downswing position.

From that position, swing through the ball so your arms reach a four o'clock position with the butt of the club (or the tee) pointing at the spot where the ball was lying. This drill will give you the proper feel for you downswing. After you work on this for several hundred swings, attempt to imitate the feel as you make a full swing. I think you can find some success.

Maybe your grip is too tight and you are focusing on using your hands too much. Maybe slow down a bit.

Loosen the grip a bit (soft rather than loose) and let the hands fall from the top of the backswing rather than trying to hit from there. Let the hands fall (or pull down with the left hand) and then they will release as the swings gathers pace.

As with all advice on the internet.....ignore it and get somebody who teaches to look at your swing.

Most obvious one is to think of the downswing as a pulling action and point the butt of the club at the ball, like closing an over and under garage door.

    Wrists will release automatically.
