Q about Deisel electric systems

So this is a weird one.
I'm talking about the propulsion system used in deisel electric locomotives and what not.
I want to build one for the craic. Obviously not a full sized beast of a thing but smaller say a GW of about 2000kg.
So here are my questions about these yokes that hopefully someone can answer.

Is there any gear reduction between the electric motor and the wheel or is it a direct drive?

Is the power to weight ratio really ****?

What size of a generator will I need.

Will all motors need to be three phase to put out enough power to push this thing along at say 40mph.
I'm assuming that electric motors have a very linear torque band so will be plenty powerful for slow pulling( though maybe not at 40mph!)

I cant think of anymore, this is only a bit of a dream at the moment so dont expect any updates!
    Thanks
