Open Water Swimming advice

    I'm training for the swim leg of a sprint triathlon - the Lough Key Tri on Sept 6th.

    It's not the most taxing of swims in terms of distance (750m). I'm managing 30 lengths in the pool in about 14-15 mins which I'm happy with. I was hoping to go faster on the day, but I tried my first lake swim in years this morning and it was an eye-opener!

    In my teens I did a lot of swimming in lakes, but I'd forgotten how difficult sighting was. It really throws your swimming rhythm, and with fogged up goggles I was getting really frustrated. Also, I found it hard to know how far I was swimming, but that's only an issue during training.

    Do any of you experienced OW swimmers have some pearls of wisdom to give? Particularly with regard to goggles, and sighting.

    Buy youself a new pair of goggles.

    I usually put a drop of washing up liquid or shower gel in each goggle,rub it in with my finger and lightly rinse under the tap. This leaves a thin film of detergent which prevent fogging (something to do with surface tension)
    Or you can buy anti fog liquid in a sports shop.

    For sighting try and find a hill, tall tree or building thats in the general direction you want to go and use this as a guide.

    Rather than stopping and lifting your head up to look, take 3/4 quick peeks with out breaking your stroke ie lift your head forward so as just your eyes break the surface. Practice this

    Also try to figure out if you tend to veer off to the left or right when you keep your head down. You can then compensate for this.

    You can also just follow the crowd, stay on someones feet and hope they are going the right way.

    As mentioned in another thread there may be canoeists who will help with navigation.

    Thanks for that. Will try the shower gel trick. I have a fairly new pair of Speedo Futura Goggles. I presume they'll be fine if I sort out the fogging. Willl probably only get 1-2 more open water swims in between now and the tri, so hope I can get myself together!
