Irish Cadets 2009: Three Languages

Hello, I wanted to apply for cadetship this year but I need three languages to do so which I only have two.
On the booklet it says the following:

    2. MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
    a. School Leavers must posses a minimum of Grade C3 in 3 Higher Level
papers and Grade D3 in 3 Ordinary/Higher level papers, in a single sitting of the
Leaving Certificate Examination. Leaving Certificate Applied does not qualify
    for this competition.
Each candidate for Army (Line) must possess a minimum of Grade D3 in the
    following Ordinary/Higher level subjects:
    (1) Mathematics.
    (2) Irish
    . (NUI matriculation exemptions apply).
    (3) English. (Candidates whose first language is not English must satisfy the
English language requirements in accordance with NUI Matriculations
    Regulations).
    (4) Third language (accepted for NUI Matriculation Registration purposes. NUI
    matriculations exemptions apply).
    (5) Any two Matriculation subjects not already selected.

Now my problem is this, I have a B3 in Higher Irish and a C1 in Higher English and no third language. I'm not sure what NUI exemptions means! Does ayone know? I'm enraged cause this is what I want to do with my life but it looks doubtful.

Right. I'll move this to the Military forum. You'll get replies from people in the know over there.

I'm not sure why you're 'enraged' or even surprised. This has been a requirement for an army cadetship since the early 1980s. It's also a requirement in order to enter many of courses under the auspices of the NUI even a civilian. Some army cadets go to Galway to study and all officers are expected to obtain a degree.

All the information you need is on military.ie. Spelt out in plain English. It seems you failed the first test of becoming a cadet. Your only option now is get a degree and then apply. But of course you won't qualify for many of the courses under the auspices of the NUI. The exemptions usually apply to people who went to school abroad.

When they look for a degree is it only a level 8?, I'll have a level 7 from DIT, I meet the requirements from the school leavers. Do you need the level 8? If so looks like im going to stay on a year and get it

" Some army cadets go to Galway to study and all officers are expected to obtain a degree. " Is that the case with other army's ? I knew cadet selection and training was tough both physically and mentally, ( have a cousin who used to be a Commandent, he was an inter county footballer played in an All Ireland minor final and won senior Connacht championship medal which obviously helped him to get in ), but it certainly is a tough but worthwhile line to follow if you can make it.

Yes its an Honours Degree, or a level 8, with a level 7 you will be considered a school leaver, not a graduate.

megaman, diverdriver pretty much has it covered, its not as if this was a last minute announcement or anything. Although I think if you really want it, you'll either get a degree or go back and get a third language in the leaving cert.

Go to the Alliance Francaise and learn enough French to do the Leaving Cert in 2010 (and do a third level course also) - its not as if they are going to let in many cadets between now and then.
