Just wondering if any posters have recently bought from any main dealership recently in current climate, and if they got a good deal, how much are they willinging to knock off price. Am been very fusturated last couple weeks looking for Yaris, either car is gone by time get there or car isnt as good as picture looks, and then somebody asking to much, but today saw nice 1.1 Colt advertised with a main dealer which was asking 5900, its a 2005, it seems a fair price, but dont want to spend more than 5k, do you think i could get 900 knocked of the price, or is that just to much?

There's one here for €5500. The Yaris keeps its value very well. What's the mileage of the Colt you looked at?

the answer to your question is, as much as they think they can squese from you.

Make an offer, the worst that can happen is that it's refused. I've had a €4,500 offer immediately accepted for a car advertised for €5,000 which had been reduced from €5,500 the week before. That was back in 2004, before the 'current economic climate'.

Yes you are right they can only say NO. Ideally prefer Yaris as they do hold their value. On the Colt there is nearly 60,000 miles on it.

I was talking to my uncle today who is having difficulty keeping up with demand on 2-4 year old Yaris, Corolla and Avensis models...so basically, if demand is strong, you'll get little or nothing off, if you were after a 5 year old Megane on the other hand you could probably have €1,000+ knocked off depending on the asking price and condition.

Bear in mind that some dealers price cars to sell and others price to see what they can get, so €5,900 might be the base price with a €250 leyway, whereas another dealer may have allowed €900 less on it when it was traded in and be in a position to offer it lower.

People always come on here asking "how much can I get off?"
The answer is there is no set amount, if any. It will depend on
    • The car
    • The condition
    • The dealer
    • the trade in price

As in all these "how much can I haggle off" threads, the key is simple - How competitively is the car priced day 1? If it's not keenly priced there's room for haggling and if it is chances are there's less.

Do your homework and establish what the true value of the car really is.

no offence intended OP - when I read it first I got a different mental image (wrong kind of dealer)

Anyway - why not just go down there with a couple of grand in cash and wave it in front of him - always manages to get them to lower their prices if they can smell/taste a sale.

i went to a main dealer recently, the price of the car was 19,000.

the model of car was a over 2 litres and it has been sitting there for months.

now after chating it over, it was apparant i knew more about the car than he did, and indeed he was actually clueless on the car and its specs. simple questions could not be answered. a bit worrying.

i took it for a test and after i went back into the glass palace and i said to him, straight sale, no finance, no trade in, whats your best price

and he flat out said its priced to sell, not 1 euro will be knocked off.

so i made my excuses and left, i would have expected at least something off considering i was a keen buyer, with no baggage.

I have always said to dealers who react like that

"Here my number, ring me when you change your mind but be quick because there are many other dealers out there"

Well of course he's going to say that! What did you expect?
I bet if you'd offered 2 grand less, the two of you could have started bargaining and you'd have got it for less

agreed , good cars like tayota are holding their own, apart from jeeps , vw are taking a big hit on passats, 07 passat would normally be worth, about 16-22k depending on the car, but today its worth and getting it hard to make 7k , as for opel and the rest of them well there is no market for them ,even ford is taking a big hit , the focus is worth nothing.

The dealership I work at knocked about 22k off a car to get rid of it, had it up for 59k and sold it a fortnight ago for 38k.

I expected something along the lines of "well its a niche market car", what with the road tax being a little on the high side, also since you have no trade in nor the need for finance i would be prepared to offer a discount, however nothing ridiculous"

that would have been a good start on his part no? he was not interested, it was clear i was interested and he was having none of it. why should i bother trying to play ball with him when he was shutting me down straight away, theirs plenty of other cars out there where i can deal with someone who wants to sell and knows their product and what they are selling.

its just another case of cowboy 'salesmen' in the car sales industry, who are simply crap salesmen. they had their years of being able to charge excess prices for cars, unfortunately many of these guys dont really know a whole lot about the cars they stock (this particular salesman told me a 2.5L 5cyl car had 100bhp, he also didnt know about the change of tax in 2008 re: before july cc based, after july co2 based), nor how to sell their product, they are just suited up eejits in empty showrooms collecting a paycheque

His price is already advertised. He's not going to say "ah sure, the price is €20k but you know what? It's really €16k"
Some might say they'll reduce the price for a cash deal but many won't.
You have to ASK for it.
That's how I changed mine recently. I took it for a spin, got my local mechanic to run a diagnostic on it and then brought it back with the printout of the diagnostic and pointed out a couple of error codes and said they were dragging down his asking price. I made an offer plus my own trade-in and left my number. The guy was adamant he wasn't going to go below his asking price.
I called in a week later, said "I see it's still there...." and then we started bargaining. I got €800 off what was already a very low asking price.
The clincher was when I said "well, there's another one in just as good nick as this one, I'll just have to buy it instead".
You gotta play hardball with them.

EDIT: bit of a shocker he got the taxation bit wrong and I agree that many of them out there would be rubbish salesmen but you'd get that in any profession. The problem is that car salesmen take a lot of money from you so it gets highlighted in that profession more.
