Problem with gears...

I have a 21 speed raleigh bike I've been fixing up. New tubes/tires, wheels aligned, chain oiled brakes replace etc etc. Only problem left is the gears.

When I switch between sometimes it doesn't work, and it will stay in the gear till I switch out and back in. Is it something I could fix myself? I'm new to all this jazz but would like to learn.

    Cheers.

Everything is possible to fix. What sort of gear shifters are on the bike? I'm presuming it's the back derailleur that's causing the problem, does the non movement happen through all the gears or just from the bottom ring? Also is it only on the movement up that it doesn't shift or also on the way down?

    Thanks for the link!

I couldn't tell ya type it is off hand, but its all through the gears I'm having the problem up and down on all rings, it seems to be quite random. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Convert it to a fixie/single-speed, you'll never have trouble with gears again!
