Hi all

can someone help? I have recently set up a band (covers) playing funk, soul, disco, etc., for weddings and functions. We are bass, drums and rhythm guitar. Although we are more interested in playing experimental originals, we feel....that ship has sailed! we're just on the bad side of 30

The thing is, we are playing numbers from james brown, stevie wonder, jackson 5, the trammps, etc., and its hard to get a "full" sound especially lacking horns, keyboards, backing/lead vocals and when the members increase artistic differences are more frequent!

So, is anyone interested(or can it be done) in playing live with us, sampling and mixing in loops of, say horns, or vocals or other backing sounds to help achieve our goal?

This is at experimental stage and if we can pull it off I think we could offer something different and possibly more enjoyable than the normal "Who's Eddie" (NO DISRESPECT INTENDED) type band. The idea, not neccessarily the style, would be like jamiroquai, bboys, incubus, etc and we're currently jamming regularly near the red cow if anyone wants to join us!

I have already posted this in the dj section so just widening the scope here!

no timewasters please and thanks all for your time

sounds good. I would lend some keys imput if I had some.
Could do some backing though, and be a backup bass/guitarist, it's just my sort of music and the sound I would like to play
what do you think?

it does sound like a good idea but i just wonder how far a wedding band can off the beating track in order to be successful
bboys jamaroqui - personally i wouldn't but we wouldn't be what you call a busy wedding band so who am i to say
but stevie, james brown, jackson 5 would have any dancefloor anywhere in the world full i would imagine
you might want to get the the brass for this though

dont worry davylee we're not playing bboys or incubus, its purely the concept these EXAMPLES use in having a 'live' dj sampling, mixing scratching..... mind you damn funny wedding to see grandparents, uncles ,aunts, etc breaking out the ol' skool moves.... point taken though, maybe i should've used better examples!!!!

still maintain jamiroquai, brand new heavies, stereo mcs, m people(i think) all pulled off good, original, dancefloor tunes with this lineup.....all we're trying to do is recreate it!!

any clearer? let me know

In my last band we played with loops and samples run off a laptop (using Cakewalk). We used royalty free samples and arranged them in ACID pro. At the gig the drummer would listen to a click track in a set of headphones to keep us synched with the samples. It worked well in that we had strings, horns, sound effects and extra vocal bits layered on top of the live stuff but it also stole a little from the spontaneity of the show.

sounds good but you're right the key to this is spontaneity so we can change sets regularly

The band was called Poser, this is going back about 4 years so there's no site but you'll find a track here: http://drop.io/posertheband
The guitars, bass and drums were played live and the synth bits and pieces were via laptop

Have you not considered midi?

using midi between td9-kx kit and dr 670 drum programmer for backing percussion but again dont want to be confined to click tracks throughout. would like freedom to play set differently each time.

what do you suggest?
