3 modem switches between 3G and HSDPA

My 3 modem has started dropping the HSDPA signal of late and tends to lock onto 3G only. Sometimes it flicks back to HSDPA and flicks back to 3G again. Anyone experienced this too and is it "normal" within the limitation of the service or is the modem toast? I have full signal most of the time and traditionally haven't had any problems with speed or anything. Now it's mostly giving 3G speeds, though, which is a bit annoying.

Mine does it all the time. I used to get HSDPA more often a few months ago but i'm getting 3G most of the time now.

Same here! I was getting 4 bar HSDPA for the first 14 days with no problems connecting here in Bandon, for the last month it has been switching between the two and also problems connecting and geting disconected after approx 30 min :-(

If I was a suspicious person I would say it wasn't a coincidence that it acted up after 14 days!!!

No co incidence about it now that they have you in contract :(

The i-HSPA firmware now on most towers probably blocks off new connections after round 7pm every evening and they may have some parallel 3g ( not i-HSPA) slots configured for ye instead to increase total slots per sector .

It is also possibly a way to 'guarantee' service in NBS areas by kicking older customers onto 3g ...likely based on the sim you have.

im getting 5 bar 3g, which sucks as that suggests its good enough to be hsdpa. at least i can get service at the moment. very flaky though. 2 days ago it changed from being ok to flaky - was away all weekend and my 2 week trial ended on saturday so i suspect they coincided somewhat.

Tbh im not expecting miracles, but just a usable service - would a booster aerial do much in terms of speed and reliability?

Yes this has started happening to me here in Drumcondra over the last three weeks. Flicking btw 3g & HS. Everytime i ring technical support: clean temp, uninstall/install modemn, disable startup in msconfig which works for a few hours. This time last year i had no coverage for nearly two months resulting in using a internet cafe although i got a refund.
Souns like network issues to me ?

Those actions do nothing. Placebo. If you went off and had a coffee and muffin it would work as well.

yep its based purely on the reception or their end. And it shouldnt be the reception if you can get it most of the time. so they doing something or the masts are over crowded.

Thinking of cancelling my direct debit on them due to the constant drops / not being able to reconnect or use the internet.

Are o2 or meteor or voda any better for midband?

Iv had so many problems with this useless modem, but it just so happens to be the only way i can get broadband. When it switches between 3g and hsdpa my download speed drops to a big fat 0. So i can either wait 5 mins for the modem to start working again or plug it out and restart mobile partner.

Their AMAZING customer service says the usual ****, "uninstall, plug out, take out the sim". Its insulting that they think we haven't already tried this stuff.

Also, does anyone know if the antenna actually improves anything?
