Are we getting one? I heard the current DCU Pres on RTÉ radio this morning, and he's just finished his ten year term there. He seemed like a great guy; friendly and measured, yet delightfully loquacious :D

He also went to TCD and Cambridge.

Is he one of the runners?

There are so many names being mentioned. Prior to this year the two perceived front-runners were Prof. Colm Kearney who was Senior Lecturer until 2008 and is from the School of Business and Prof. Jane Ohlmeyer who was Head of the School of Histories and Humanities. Both have taken research leave over the last year I believe so may not be in the race any more. Kearney has also strongly been linked with the job of President in DCU. Both were strong proponents of the radical restructuring TCD has undergone which, while making things more efficient for students, was not overly popular with staff.

At the minute the favoured internal candidate is the Vice-Provost/Chief Academic Officer Prof. Patrick Prendergast.

This should be the first Provost election where external candidates are eligible, throwing things open wide a bit.

Personally, I do not not want to see Ferdinand get it; I think he would be a poor choice. Just because you can blog, doesn't mean you can run a high-profile University. Internally, if the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Prof. Michael Marsh gets it, everyone can pack up and leave. He doesn't believe the Library should ever hld more than one copy of a single book for undergraduate courses. But he is unlikely to stand.

My preferred internal candidate is Prof. Clive Williams, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics & Science. He is very pro-student, is well liked by academic and was an excellent Bursar.

As for external, well I am not very up on other potential candidates in Ireland or otherwise. Just not Ferdinand or Hugh Brady. Please.

Indeed, I think it was the Biochem Soc he founded when he was a student here?

The first thing I'd do would be to bring back the Provost's summer garden party.
