Working in family business

Hi all. This is not directly tax related but I thought someone might know the answer. My pal's business went down the tubes recently. He was self employed, has no stamps and so is claiming JA as opposed to JB.

Can he help out in a family member's business without effecting his availability to work? I'm not talking about doing hours for pay, I'm talking about going out with his Dad unloading bags of sticks to help out on occassion which he would always have done while he had his own business. He seems to think he can't, that if he was seen he would be cut off. Any insight??

tell your friend not to be so supersticious, of course he can help out, but then again or course the jealous begrudger down the road will want to report him, it life one big circle,

a fine example, i left off a friend of mine at christmas, due to lack of work ,so he got job seekers allowance, but a few weeks on i had a cow calving and he gave me a hand to pull the calf, so another neighbour walks into the yard, and says , oh your back to work gary are you,

gary replies no im just helping my friend out of a spot, and the next week his money didnt show up, in the post office, this was a fine example of begrudgery, so gary reared up on the socail workers and told them a few home truths, and guess what his money arrived the next week ,including his back payment ,and the week they stopped on him ,

so there you see the whole circle of what happens when pulling a calf, now the sticks you were talking about,!!!!!!!!!

Yep. No good deed deserves to go unpunished...... But I was hoping for the official line if anyone knows it.
