festoon lighting

    Hi folks...

Christmas time is approaching (sorry for the reminder) and festoon lighting will be getting its' annual airing.

My question is, how do the lamps switch on/off to create the flicker effect? I am partly involved with the Christmas lights in my town & the approach this year is to go green & use LED (http://www.led-bulbs.org.uk/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=18) At present, filament lamps are in use.

The electrical contractor is saying "the festoon harness has a "chip" which does the flashing and will have to be removed first" This is 2nd hand information and I am assuming that each holder has a "chip" but I could be wrong. I'd much appreciate if someone here could shine some light (pun) on the whole festoon thing and flashing the lamps on and off.

    thank you

hi, there will only be one "box" that controls the flickering, not every holder. The lamps are standard, but a control box with secne sellection will power the lights. If everything is wired up changing or updating this box should be easy.
