Free laptop = wishful thinking?!

    Hi,

My mother wants to buy me a laptop for my birthday next week, because that's just the kind of lovely generous mother she is! However, I'm about to start a training contract with KPMG, and she has some notion that I might be given a free laptop by them when I start there. I have no reason to think that I might, but she wanted me to double check before she gets me one. Can anyone tell me if she's right?

    Thanks!

My friend works for a similar company and he was issued with a company laptop when he started. At the same time you must remember its company property and they can revoke it at any time.

Its never any harm to have your own.

    Hi

I work for an accountancy firm (not KPMG) and we all have work laptops.

You will have yours 24/7/365 but please bear in mind they are work laptops - you shouldnt put any thing on them like itunes etc, I know where I work any sort of illegal music or even itunes on a laptop gets you a written warning.

Having said that if you just want a laptop to use for surfing internet and stuff you can use the work one. Again though bear in mind if your looking at any funny stuff they can also tell.

In my company we have laptop audits on a regular basis ( ie. IT appear at your desk and so through your laptop for anything you shouldn't have on it)

I have my own laptop and so does 99% of the people I work with as it is easier than getting in trouble.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like I'd definitely be best to get my own one!

yeah I got a laptop and usual work rules apply to it

so what I did was bought a seperate hard drive for mine and just swap between them

that way I got A top range spec CPU for 100 euro as opposed to 500

Where I work, if you plug in the internet cable to the laptop in work (which you do everyday) it will start uninstalling everything you put on it automagically. Even firefox ffs!

You're issued a laptop, but it is the property of KPMG and it will be scanned regularly and you will be asked to remove certain programs (at least this is the case at many firms). So, if you really want it to be yours, tell your mum that she's best off getting you your own.

ha. That's a good one by your work alrite. Ours aren't that much on the ball, I'd be lost if they deleted my firefox. Were still using internet explorer 6 which I despise

Even still if you have a family/home computer, I'd say even use that instead. I wouldn't see the point in getting two laptops when a home PC can usually do you for most of your needs.

Totally agree with above. Laptops are fine but you should be able to get a much better spec home pc for the same money. You'll still have the laptop for general surfing when out and about, if they give you one!
