    I just saw this stat and it seems absolutely astronomical :eek:

    I googled it and the consensus seems to be that it costs the following in other countries -

    UK - around £30,000 per year

    Canada - CD$22,000 per year

    USA - USD$15,000 - $18,000 per year

    Why are we being so badly ripped off in Ireland???

    Could this be a case of lies & damn statistics

    Is there any breakdown of what constitutes 'cost' within each of the examples?

    Without knowing that each is based on the same set of factors they are irrelevant.

    Well I don't imagine that any government could release the stats without factoring in the obvious costs such as food, clothing, utilities and prison maintenance (or lack thereof) and paying the Prison Officers.

    Just seems completely outlandish to me regardless of what they've included in it.
