Two days of work whilst receiving JA.

    Hi,

I am in receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance (JA). Earlier this week, I was offered, and accepted, a position of Night Porter in a local hotel. However, while the work was fine, the hours (00:00 to 08:00) had a substantial negative impact upon me, and I left the job after two days, and I am again actively looking for work.

I think I will inform my local social welfare office of this brief bout of employment. My question is this: will the fact that I left the job voluntarily, albeit for legitimate reasons, have any adverse affect on my social welfare payment?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

You may lose up to nine weeks payment unless there was good reason why you left employment voluntarily... the deciding officer will decide whether there was good reason. The way you could put it was that the hours that you were doing were unsociable and they where having an adverse affect on your ability to function physically and mentally ie. you had problems re-adjusting your bodily clock from nights to days and that affected your health and wellbeing in addition to there being Health and Safety Risks. Can you get a letter from your GP to cover the same - but make it clear that you are all right now and you now know that night shifts are not suitable forms of employment for you.
