Is it the true the flash sites should be avoided because they lack searchability by search engines? I was told that doing a site in CSS was preferable to flash due to this reason.

Yes, but you can always offer a HTML alternative.

How do you redirect a user to a html based site if they dont have flash enabled?

    Thanks

You create a normal html link somewhere at the top or footer of the page.

What's the point in doing it twice, particularly when - if the site operates properly - someone searching in Google will be directed to the page that they want, never even seeing the Flash option.

Flash is great for multimedia applications, games, etc, but it's ridiculous to use it for a website.

Ive been on the wrong end of this in a big way a few years ago. my advice if you are looking to rank anywhere on google is DO NOT create your site in flash.
