There is a full time course I really want to do and have been to college interview etc. I have forms filled out to apply for BTEA but can i also apply for Free Fees and wondered does this actually cover the full cost of the course fees? I am on jobseekers benefit and rent allowance and also claiming for my partner as a dependant adult. What am I likelt to be covered for? Have I any chance of doing this course??

Read the BTEA guidelines. It does not cover fees, where did you get this idea from?

If you have a look at the rules for fees such as progression, recognised college etc. on www.studentfinance.ie
You ca see if your college is included and if you are eligible, it depends on your college, length of course etc.

yeah i looked at that website which was helpful, but my college does not seemed to be listed as its a private college but when i was at interview they said because all of my other requirements are met and im doing the right course for guidelines then i may get it.....so need to basically just go to Fingal Co.Co I think and see what im entitled to. Just wondered if any of my social welfare claims would be affected by all this. Cheers.

Ok I don't understand your case.

You are going to a private college that charge fees?
This course & college is not listed under the free fees initiative?
Have you spoken to your local Social Welfare office about your eligibility for the Btea? Have you read the qualifying conditions of the Btea?

    You need to be clearer!

Ok, I have applied for an undergraduate 3 years course in Dublin Business School, which is a Higher Education course (HETAC). They told me they are not government funded. When i checked to see if they are listed on studentfinance.ie, they werent. I know the rules for the BTEA. Just want to know the likely hood of getting free fees for this course!

You need to get in touch with the citizens information services to find out more on whether you qualify for BTEA or alternatively contact the Dept. of social welfare. As regards to free fees, they are given to students attending approved colleges receiving public funding for courses of not less than 2 years duration... information can be obtained from your local county council Higher Educaton section and also on www.education.ie which is the Dept. of Educations website. There is also the student maintenance grant which is a means tested scheme. The county council should be able to advise on whether DBS comes under free fees and the maintenance grant. Hope it helps.

    Hi OP

Most mature students go through the CAO system for approved courses. I myself am going into my second year next month. At least that way there is a chance you could get your fees paid for and be eligable for the BTEA. You have to be in receipt of payments from the social welfare for at least 12 months to be entitled to it. Although I think if you are at least 8 months in receipt then you are entitled to it. Private colleges are very tricky as you said they are not funded by the government and rely on fees.
