    Irelands volunteer Rape Crises Centre
They have helped thousands over the years nationally and probably helped saved lives too (of those in depression and extreme stress, self-harm and suicide, etc).
    A noble cause indeed.

The Make A Wish Foundation is a very decent charity.

Via funding, it grants the wishes of children between the ages of three and eighteen, who are living with life-threatening illness.

A friend of mine benefited from it a few years ago and it certainly changed her life.

I was thinking of doing that, especially after I sat and watched one of them try to get people to sign up, and the amount of filthy looks and swearing thrown his way made me feel bad for the guy

Make a wish sounds good. To be honest I'd feel like I'm throwing money down a bottomless pit giving money to most charities at least make a wish has a simple straight forward goal that doesn't involve warlords or crippled health care systems.

He looks like he's about to punch that child, probably wondering if he can get away with that too.

How about the National Council For The Blind?
    http://www.ncbi.ie/

Of all the charities, this really sticks out I think as the
affliction is just so terrible and sad.

Whichever charity you choose, do follow up and take more than just
    a monetary interest.

Nothing bugs me more than folks donating to a charity
that they have zero interest in or care for and they simply
fill out a form and give money. It could be bloody anything
and they are just so free with their money. Find out where
your money is going, is it traceable and is it helping, really helping.

    www.suas.ie

I've done volunteer work with them, helping kids to read/with their schoolwork, also done a fair bit of collecting for them.

They also help out schools in India and Kenya.

I work for a charity but screw them.

There's only around 700 highland silverback gorillas left in the world. Try and help them somehow

    Three words.....

    LOCAL, LOCAL, LOCAL.

With a bit of research you will find many worthy causes right on your doorstep rather than your donation disappearing into the admin cost of some global charity.

    The Alzheimer's Society.

Two people in my family have suffered from this. It is one of the worst illnesses I've ever seen. Helping people suffering from this and investing money in research for a cure is money well spent.

Give to the DSPCA, their stables burned down recently and they get very little help financially.

I ended up donating to the Irish Cancer Society. There were some great suggestions by you all, but that's the one I felt I should support. Might donate to another one soon though! So I'll keep them all in mind. Thanks for the answers :)

Is there any particular reason why you decided to donate or was it just a random act of kindness?

    Seeing as you asked...

I'm running in a charity fun run for St Patrick's Hospital on Sept 19th. It's to raise funds for facilities for adolescents with mental health problems. The event is called The Runaway Bride and takes place in the Phoenix Park. It involves running two kilometres...in a wedding dress! :D

Here's my sponsorship page...cheeky I know but hey, if you don't ask, you don't get and it's for a good cause:

Here's the event site: http://www.runawaybride.ie for anyone who wants to participate.

I realised I don't do anything for charity and I feel I should help those less fortunate.

Can I just update on that, in that I sent an e-mail from the Contacts section from the website on how to donate money and I got an 'undeliverable' receipt. Probably nothing sinister but I will check it out

if you are donating more than €250 don't forget to give them your PRSI number and such so the charity can claim back the tax, makes the donation worth €400 to them

third world charities are getting a lot less aid because of the recession

Just remembered there's a Barretstown forum on boards.ie, they're actually looking for volunteers to help out at an event that's coming up

Won't someone think of the children! You get to help children and hopefully saved children can go on to contribute more in the future.

    http://www.ispcc.ie/getdoc/a1074026-0a1a-4908-b28e-b942b72e6e3e/Donate.aspx

€10 would pay for 2 calls from distressed children and young people to Childline

€30 would fund travel to a child’s home on a weekly basis for a 6 week assessment period

€50 would contribute towards the cost of arts and crafts materials to work with children

€100 would fund the purchase of 2 web-cams for an online counselling session

My mother actually has Alzheimer's. Nice to see some tact.

But it's the charity I'd recommend. You can't go wrong no matter who you donate to. Everybody needs help so pick one you're interested in.

Yes, I'm having that problem too. People seem to be very attached to a dress they'll only ever wear once. They throw up their hands in horror when I tell them I want to go running in it. Anyone got a dress they want to donate?
