The small cap (although at least it's better than the other mobile broadband operators that I can see), the high practical contention ratio, the extremely low upload speed (I clocked 58kbits on a friend's connection in Blackrock on Wednesday; that's dialup speed) which is important for filesharing, especially on Bittorrent where sharing ratio influences your download speed from others (or whether you download from them at all), and the frequent disconnections are going to cause serious problems with P2P.

That said, I used to suffer through dialup when I used to use WinMX, Audiogalaxy (gah) and Napster a decade ago - it's possible but very unpleasant.

I like the idea of getting away from the ridiculously expensive line rental here (which is why I never ordered one in this house, and got my broadband and phone through UPC, although I almost never use the home phone anyway), but my brief experience with mobile broadband so far has been extremely poor compared with DSL, fixed wireless (IBB had woeful customer service but generally excellent broadband) and now cable internet. At best, it's a small hop above dialup... at worst, it's a few painful steps down the ladder.
If you have any other half-decent options at home, I'd leave mobile broadband for... well, mobile purposes.

Thanks for that very considered reply. Its exactly what I was looking for. The experience of someone who has actually used it.
Interesting tha the speeds are nowhere near what they are quoting.. the whole "up to .." scam is ridiculaous.. dunno how the ombudsman or whoever lets that go on...

Yeah I have broadband options at home,on u.tv at the moment, and its grand.. but like a lot of people now I am looking down the barrell of having to take a job in Dublin and commute up and down on the weekends..
    Hence the ideas about mobile.

Interesting thing that turned up while I was looking a the various mobile options is .. Roaming.. Turns out O2 etc with go to town on you if you take your mobile thingy to the six counties or over to London.. but Three.ie actually don't charge anything at all for roaming...

    Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.
