drainage query

just wondering roughly how expensive drainage is working out these days, whats the biggest cost, stone? A fella told me recently he was quoted 240 euro for a lorry of 4 inch stone, suppose a digger is about 30 euro an hr maybe, have a good bit of ground I would like to drain or redrain, probably about 30 years since it was done, I feel alot of the ground could do with be reseeded especially the silage area but seems like a waste till its properly drained, sounds like it would cost a bomb though, anyone take on a bigish draining job and buy their own machine or anything like that? Have a few 10 acre size silage fields for example, dont know much about drainage but even if you had canals at the outside of the fields surely it would be too much of a distance to run drains all the way accross the field to the canal if ye follow me, would teagasc be able to advise on best position of drains etc

i will pm you this evening with details, drainage stone is about 150-180 before vat per 8wheeler load, 18-20ton, per load,

i do alot of the sort of work you are talking about, i would have 3 machines full time on the country with farmers, reclaiming and draining, out of a fleet of 25 machines, so its steady,

i will include prices per meter for you in the pm, it is worth your while digging, tile drains and using a 4 or 6 inch landdrainage pipe with 4inch clean stone on it, i also reseed the fields afterwards, with a machine that knits the seed

turns out like a brand new field next year,b for the silage, and the quality of grass is 100 times better


i had another fella there sent me a pm about the same subject but i havent been on line lately so i will get back to the 2 of ye this evening

drainage stone can be got for 140 euro plus vat a tonne for 20 tonne loads in north leinster this year

i must agree with you there bob, im after talking to a few men around me , and i estimated it from my own quarry, and around 140, either way under or over

Anyone using that new pipe from conactagri? The one that doesn't need stone. Is it any good?

i have seen it at shows and in creameries, and so on but i havent used it yet, im a strong believer of the tile drain, and 4inch land drainage pipe and 4 inch clean stone , if done right its un beatable,

if you go into moorey ground with that new pipe it wont work , simple as that you need stone, its naturally a drainage product, a plastic filter, will eventually clog and cause a wet spot and when the baler goes down in that wet spot and damages the reel ,then youll wish you done things the traditional way that works, and always will work
