Curious re "the talk"

Am very curious about something as broke up with a guy a month ago after seeing each other for a few months. It was pretty intense etc, both in our 30s but a number of people have said to me subsequently that if you didn't have "the talk" the it wasn't as serious as you thought.

I thought "the talk" was something I just did in my early 20s and that any relationship now should be based on how you feel/going with the flow etc. Is "the talk" about exclusivity/where is this relationship going essential to a happy/successful relationship? What happened to trusting your instincts etc?

    Any advice welcome!

i've always thought of "the talk" as a kinda check-in point for both parties. Its an opportunity to make sure you are both happy with the way things are going and I think it applies across all age groups really.

That said, communication should be happening all the way the way through...but you know how it is sometimes:)

Well ... if "the talk" is about exclusivity ... then don't be shocked or surprised if his/her interest in other men/women becomes something more and you complain of infidelity.

Trusting instincts is all nice and cuddly - but it crumbles because people have different instincts and have different understandings of relationships and if you are not communicating then it is a case of the blind leading the blind.....

    All the best !

So what you are saying is that it's still, essentially, an open relationship?
