The light on my 2004 Golf Petrol MK5 has started flashing telling me I need to replace my brake pads (think the light only indicates the front pads though)

anyway, I got a quote from a local garage, how does this compare? does it sound cheap? I asked the receptionist to confirm that these prices included fitting, which it does

€55 for front pads, €40 for rear pads.

95 quid for front and rear pads fitted? sounds like a bargain to me

Make sure the pads have the connectors for the brake wear sensors. Some of the cheaper ones don't...

Sounds very cheap, genuine parts alone would be costing close to that

A GOLD Mk5 and your worried about the price of brake pads

GOLD Brake pads will set up back a bit.

Gold is around $ 940 per ounce :D:P

Ring Halfords for a price, then ring VW Parts for a price and then ring a local auto factors.

Shop around and haggle - its a recession after all.

fit them yourself - its very easy - just unclip holders take out pads, push pistons in calipers back and put in new pads.

    Good luck

Could explain the price difference, i'll ring them back and investigate.

thought it sounded cheap myself alright

rang back the garage to book the car in.
spoke to a different person and they confirmed the prices,
    pads also have sensors.

seems to be too good to be true. things better not change when I go to collect the car after fitting ;-)

I dont like this pricing. Pads at a motor factors would be about 35 for the front. Now a garage that will fit pads both sides for €20 inc VAT and possibly a bit a brake fluid & copper grease dounds dodgy to me.

I think (and this is only a guess) they might have seen that your rear pads are almost new and will only change the front.
I cannot explain that price any other way

hmmm.. i've never been to this garage before as i'm new to the town but I do know it has been around for a long time and was recommended by my g/f's dad who is from the town and knows the garage.

i havent left the car in yet so they can't know anything about the condition of the existing pads.

i will report back after I get the pads replaced. the reason I put this post up was becuase it did seem cheap to me (even though I wouldn't be that well up on this sort of stuff)

as i said before the price could well change once the pads are replaced and i go to collect the car

Like I said. Insist on the correct pads with wear connectors. I had mine done once on the cheap, they told me that the connectors were fine.. all they had done was taken the fuse out behind the warning light to make it look like the problem was fixed and put in cheap pads (which to be fair do actually work in terms of stopping the car and passing an NCT)

I got brake pads recently for a Bora (MkIV) and they were almost €70 for parts alone (main dealer price). So OPs price of €95 sounds reasonable.

OP is correct, the warning light only indicates that the front pads are worn - no sensors on the rear pads. On the MkIV only the nearside inner brake pad has a sensor.
