    Hi there

I thought I had a virus on my laptop so I ran a avast scan on it. It recommended I restart the computer and run a scan from startup.

When I did this I found 5 viruses and I chose the option to delete rather than repair. I think this may have fecked up the computer as now when I try to start it, it goes to the start screen (where you log in) and as soon as you click on "Administrator" to log in, it logs you out immediately afterwards.

I have tried to run in Safe Mode but the same thing happens.

    Have I killed my laptop?

Have you got the install discs (to reinstall the operating system)?

Or does your laptop have a reinstall partition (does it give you a prompt such as 'Press F12 to enter recovery mode' at startup?)

Have you tried "Last Known Good Configuration" ? Seeing as the restore point resets itself after every successful log on , and seeing as you haven't logged in since the problem started it may work.

I dont have the install discs, (bought the laptop 2nd hand and they werent included. Its windows XP. Where would I get one?

It doesnt give me an f12 option but I do get the f10 option of Rom Based Setup.

I've tried Last Known Good Configuration and no good.

When I log in, it goes in for the briefest of seconds and then says "logging off" then "Saving your settings".

This sounds similar to what happened to me when in the States. Horrific problem, and there really seems to be no way around it, I tried so much!

What I did was get a friend to give me his Vista installation (laptop was originally XP) and installed Vista which deleted XP but luckily backed-up all my documents etc in a folder called windows.old in the hard drive folder - so I didn't lose anything, but now I have Vista... which is a loss in itself.

assuming you find some install cds of xp/vista do an install, but choose another directory, ie winxp or vista instead of c:\windows. Let install run happily, complete it and reboot. On logging in, you can browse to all your old documents etc (c:\documents and settings\username\my documents or desktop). Copy it all to a memory stick or external drive, then for tidiness sake, wipe the whole laptop and start again.
Either that or download a live ubuntu cd here http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download , burn it (from some friendly persons working laptop/pc) and boot from it, usin the option to try it out. this gives you a graphical operating system that wont have overwritten your other one. find your files, save them, and then wipe pc and reinstall again.
