This is what my cousin is telling me. Hes got a grant the last two years and he keeps tellin me not to bother applying (even though im in dire need) for a grant this year because my dad is self employed. Ive heard other people mention this before too. Has anyone recieved a grant even with a self employed parent? Details Please?? Thanks :)

There are plenty of disadvantages to being self-employed, it wouldn't surprise me if you can't get a grant because of your father's employment status. I can't get an overdraft on a loan because I'm semi-self-employed.

Being self employed does not exclude you from getting the grant - it's all down to the income limits.. the form is a little more difficult to complete if your parent is self employed - read it carefully and perhaps get accountant to complete the sections about interest and finance payments

My father is self employed and I got a grant in 1997 (thanks to some creative accounting) but by the time my sister applied in 2006..no chance. He had employess that wldnt even make it so he had no chance.

My mother was self employed when my brother got his grant 4 years ago, no trouble at all. Depends on how much your parents earn.

Depends on how many siblings you have and how far you live from the college you're going to. All details on studentfinance.ie

i think the lesson to be taken from this is that you should not listen to your cousin. lmao... dont even both applying is the advice. when i was going through the grant process there was no mention of self employed people being excluded so get that application in before the end of the month and dont be listening to that fool of a cousin.
