    Hi guys,

During my recent Logic problem, Denis had pointed out that I shouldn't be recording to my IMac's internal drive. I am awaiting the delivery of a new external drive.

I've been looking around the net for info on how to record directly to the external drive with no joy.

Can anybody throw some light on this dark art?

    Thanks

    Rock

When your creating your new project just set up the heirarchy on the External HDD.

For existing Projects Copy all the data to your external HDD and any new recordings will be allocated to the appropriate folder on your external HDD.

But Before you start recording onto the new drive Make sure to format it first and label it properly so as not to confuse yourself

Whenever you create a new project/song you will get a dialogue of where you want to save it. Navigate to your external HD and Save. All audio and related files that you record will be saved to that location.
I dont use Logic regularly, but I cant remember it being any more difficult than that.

    Thanks Sonofjim and Denis,

Seems pretty straight forward. Will doing things this way make Logic work better/more efficiently?

    As easy as that but...
Before you do anything open disk utility HD>Applications>utilities
Select your new disk and format it as Mac OS extended NOT journaled.
Your main OS disk is journaled but your recording drive should not be.
A journaled drive can cause a big delay as soon as you hit stop after recording.
To transfer your existing projects to the external HD just open them and file>save as. Include external audio files but don't select impulses and samples etc.
You should also repair permissions on your main os drive every week and after every software install or update. Just select the drive in disk utility and repair permissions. At first it will look like nothing is happening but be patient.
If you do it regularly it does not take long but if this is the first time it will take 5-10 minutes. Repairing permissions will make everything run faster.

    Thanks TMS,

You're a mine of useful information. Years of practice and self denial I suppose.

I won't have the external drive for another week but looking forward to getting things in order.

    Thanks again.

    Rock.
