    Hi,

a friend has a ps3 - not used much but has a nipper on the way soon.
So, he wants to get a camcorder -probably S-Def - and to store edited movies on the ps3. He has a P4 computer to edit the files on.

do any of you use a HDV cam with your PS3 & what type of pc ?

What file types does the ps3 support -video wise.
What camcorders do ye have - and do you use your ps3 for this.

    I have a Canon HG10 high-def but his pc cannot edit these - P4. Hence the S-def.

any other info would be great

    thx
    k

PS3 can play 99% of AVI/DIVX/MP4 video files. You will be ok.

I use my HD camcorder with the PS3, it plays 1080i m2ts files without problems. It is so much faster and better watching these clips on the PS3 than on the PC.

As long as you don't export it to any weird xvid format or something, yuo'llbe fine. Stick with mpeg1 2 or 4.

    Hi DuPW,

can you give more details as to your camcorder - file type (avchd), make model.
do you encode or edit the clips before you put them onto the ps3 ?
Do you connected the cam to the ps3 and pull in the raw m2ts files onto the hard drive -like from a standard photo camera.

I have a canon hg10 -with avchd m2ts files - and it takes a good pc to edit them into one movie.
    must try mine out also.

this could help a lot and allow him to use a hd cam instead of an older SD one

    thanks

I have a sony HDR-SR11, I shoot in 1080i, avchd, m2ts files. Yes, I do connect the camcorder to the PS3 directly and copy files to the harddisk. You'll have to look for the correct directory though, select 'show all' to actually see the files or something like that.
I use the PS3 to select the good clips, I watch the clips and write down where the interesting parts are. pause and rewind and stuff is very straightforward and quick with the PS3. So with a list of file names and times I continue on the PC to edit. The only problem is that the filenames don't correspond. When you connect to the PC, the Sony software changes the name of the file, like 120.m2ts (it just numbers the files) to 200908151030.m2ts (date and time) so you have to figure that out.
What you can do is copy the files to your pc as .mt2s files, put them on a (big) usb stick and copy them on to the PS3, a couple of extra steps. I first did it this way before I figured out how to do find the files on the camcorder with the PS3.

When I first played the HD footage on my PS3 with HD tv and full suround sound I was very impressed. The sony camcorder captures sound in 5.1 so when you are watching the footage, you feel like holding the camera.

This is one of the many aspects of the PS3 I have to explain to (older) people when I tell them why I have a PS3. For me it is 50% games, 50% media centre.
