    Hi

Anyone know where I might get an oldstyle BB, am fixing up an old MTB for a friend and the BB cups have split. Need to get a bottom bracket with square section near the end for the pedals and then is finished off with threads for the lock nut for the pedals....clear as mud....excellent!

(will try ans post pic later):(

A square taper bottom bracket. Any bike shop will have them - or online in places like CRC. You need to get one the right size - BB width (68 or 73mm) and axle length (usually 113mm to 121mm)

Thanks for the replies folks but its not quite that easy, have had a look at the online stores and cant quit see the one I want. Regarding the pic enclosed, it would need to have about 100mm of thread outside the square end...

I'll use my Professional Graphic Design skills......:D

Looks like it's an old-style cup and cone bottom bracket (rather than one of the sealed units above). Are the bearings, axle, cups etc. all separate?

    How old is the bike?

You'll have a hard time finding a cup and cone bb these days - but you never know.

The pic of the enclosed BB from CRC has bolts that screw into the axle while in your diagram you've treads that use a nut. Both are acceptable and interchangable designs with the screw in bolts now that bit more popular it seems.
I similarly had to recently change my bottom bracket axle and bearing cups on my old hack mtb commuter. Most of the LBS around dublin only done the full sealed bottom brackets as in the pic and were charging 20 euro for such which so I got the axle and bearing cups from Freemans cycles (below link). It was the only online store I could find that sold the bearing cups and axles seperately. Postage was on the expensive side at about £9 but I'd a few other parts ordered also.

yep i think i had a bike like that many years ago, i think i replaced it with a standard square taper with bolts (i think i replaced crankset as well because it kept falling off) like Dr_Colossus said

Apart from the advice given by Morgan and Dr Colosus I would go for the sealed bearing type because they are easier to fit and no adjustment required.
I have a used square taper 68x122.5 (triple) axel and cones (no bearing cages)that I replaced recently. You are welcome to have it for postage. Pm me if interested.

Try phoning the older shops: delaneys on harolds cross bridge, mc donalds rathgar, city cycles blackhall place and cabra and theres one in fairview whose name I forget but where I actually have bought a complete BB set- axle, ball bearing units and left & right cups.
