I'm going to college in september and my parents have recently separated and times are very tough at home in every way especially financially. I know i wont get the grant because it doesnt take any of that stuff into account n my dads wage is just over the cut off limit. My plan is to put down one parents details ie. the one I live with. My mam only works a few hours a week and i might be entitled to it that way. Its the only way I'll get a chance to go to college and I have to work 4 days a week too just to try get myself an education.

Is it worth the risk of getting caught and lying or should I chance it anyway? what do people think?

It won't quite work that way. It's not worth the lie because they'll require some information about your second parent which you'll be unable to provide.

If your parents are legally separated then you'll be required to provide copies of the separation and maintenance agreement. If your parents are just living apart but not legally separated then affidavits will be required to prove this and document any maintenance agreement. Once this information has been provided then I think that you'll be assessed on the basis of the income of the parent you reside with and the terms of any maintenance agreement that's in place.

The good news is that this probably makes you more likely to qualify.

Edit: I'll also add that the Dept. of Social and Family Affairs are currently being more tight in their processing of applications for any payment than ever before.
