Decided to report on my hols from the fore mentioned places!
Flew to Prague with Ryanair due to early flight compared to Aer Lingus. Stayed in Residence Karolina which is an old building of apartments near city centre (15 mins walk) but all done up brilliantly, roughly sleeps 5-6 and totally modern, about 40 euro each a night. Not cheap cheap but great and nice alternative to a hotel. All the usual stuff in Prague though would say avoid doing the castle tour but rather stroll up and see the changing of the guard and also around the grounds. Also go up the hill that you see from Charles Bridge, there is a lovely funicular railway up to it.
Prebooked cars with the apartments crowd and a guy pickes us up at the airport, set fee and all done. We got a train to Krakow (bad mistake, 8 hours when a bus would have been much less as its old lines).
We booked an apartment and I kid you not, as close to market square as you could get! Its Old town apartments on google, we stayed in their family apartment and could sleep 5 in beds and would work out at 60 euro a night for the apartment. Prices are cheap here too and again they pre booked us a car for both picking us up and taking us to airport, set fee. Usual stuff like Jewish district, Wavel castle, Auschwitz, SAlt mines are all worth a look. FOr eating, try Roosters instead of main square as food is much more main stream and suitable to the Irish palette. Beer is best drink in both places as its about 1.50 a pint for the their local brews (staropramen in Prague and Lech or Tyskie in Krakow).
All in all, would definitely recommend apartments instead of hotels for modern luxury stay and freedom.
