HDMI output on graphics cards

    Does a graphics card with HDMI output make much of a difference to visuals?
    (assuming ofc that the monitor has a hdmi port also)

    Im guessing that HD movies might gain the true high definition, but would it do anything for games?

    Usually when the monitor has the HDMI port aswell, it makes a small difference to games, you'll notice it, but its nothing too spectacular. blu-ray or HD movies are pretty cool tho.

    DVI is basically a subset of HDMI so there is no discernable image quality difference. Same encoding just different connectors and HDMI has the ability to carry HD Audio as well.

    HDMI was preceeded by DVI. HDMI adds a more compact connection profile, Similar to USB and not requiring screwpins like DVI, and support for full surround sound audio, whereas the DVI only did Video. The Video however is essentially the same.

    The DVI on some high end cards does output audio, however you have to use an HDMI cable, via the DVI to HDMI adapter that comes with the card. A DVI cable will not transmit sound in any shape.

    Cheers I always wondered how ATI managed it. No witchcraft involved at all then :)
