"Damp" smell from clothes after washing

Been having trouble with the washing machine. After we wash our clothes, theres sometimes a "damp" smell from the clothes. By "damp" I mean that horrible smell you get on clothes if you leave them inside the machine for too long.(which we haven't been doing). Machine is under 2 years old, Hotpoint WD420.

Funny thing is, we had a problem recently with that same kinda smell coming from our sink? Could it be a problem with our water supply rather than the machine/ and or the pipes connecting sink and machine or something?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Not sure if we need a waching machine serviceman or a plumber.

Just google'ling the same problem. It says to try a maintenance wash, that is, put a wash on the highest temp with no clothes in it.
Then put a wash on highest temp with a cup of 'distilled white vinegar' in the tablet drawer, or get a tablet that contains bleach(not the non bio type). Not sure if u can get distilled white vinegar here (not the chipper type). It is used for cleaning.
hope that helps, i am going to do it this evening

There was a thread about this a while back. Are you using liquid detergent such as those 'small and mighty' ones? If so, they're the problem because they don't have any bleaching agents in them. They made my machine smelly and slimy. Once you go back to using powder the smell will go, but do a boil wash with powder and no clothes first - you should do that once a month anyway to keep your machine in good condition.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

In response to this, we have actually used powder all the way since we got the machine. I too googled the problem and have done a 90 degree cycle with no clothes and powder and the problem seems to have improved. I'm actually blaming the cheap-ish softener we were using. Google tells me they are similar to a layer of wax on the clothes that mean any dirt on them actually can't be washed out properly. So its powder only for me from now on and so far, so good.:D

    Hi,
had the same problem. Put a cup of malt vinegar into the machine and then do a hot wash with no clothes in the machine. This worked for me

Into the drawer where I'd normally put the powder? Sorry if this seems like a retarded question btw, I never claimed to be domesticated!:pac:

I put it directly into the drum, closed the door and put on the hottest wash.

You could use one of the balls that come with aerial or persil liquid washes.
