2nd Chance student - Grant Question

    Hi all,

Please help as i'm a little confused,

I'm returning to college in Sept as a dependant mature student(26), i previously attended college in 2002 but dropped out of first year after about 6 months, i didn't apply for a grant back then, will i be entitled to a grant and free fees? do i need a letter from my previous college stating that i was enrolled but didn't finish? or should i leave this section blank and say nothing as it's more than 5 years since i last attended and i didn't apply for the grant back then?

Have been on to the local VEC but they seem pretty vague about it. I dont want to mess this up as 4 years or college are swinging on the grant money.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Well it's probably a good idea to fill it in on the form. There's a question that asks if you have previously attended but not completed an undergraduate course. You don't want them to give them any excuse to delay it. You are almost certainly entitled as a second chance student.

Re: documentation, I'm not sure. Did you sit any exams or have any first semester results you could send them? If not, well, the application does say to include documentation for each course "part-completed". So you could argue that 6 months wasn't even that. That's my excuse anyway. :D

I'd imagine they'd know your fee situation from your PPS number anyway.

Hi thanks for your reply, i didn't take any exams so have no evidence of results, ive been on to the college to get a letter to say i attended but they are soooooo slow to issue it(about 2 weeks now)

I presume my fees would have been paid for back then, i do remember paying an acceptance fee(roughly 600 at the time)

I think i may ring them again tomorrow to clear it up

I'll be in college September. I dropped out after 04/05. This term will be 09/10. Is that the required 5 year gap or do they say may 05 to sep 09 is 4 years?

Hi, i think thats a gap of 4 academic years 05/06, 06/07, 07/08 and 08/09. I'm not sure what the grant situation is in that case. Did you apply for and/oe receive a grant in the 04/05 year?
