I've raced on anti-botics before, every time I've done it I've sworn never to do it again. Last few times I even listened to myself. It's always messed me up.

If your on antibotics your obviously suffering from a infection. The question is should you be racing with an infection?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭JKF

Agree with Tunney here: Don't race at all!
Having had ongoing health problems myself for the past few years I've been on what seems like every type of antibiotic known to man. Trying to run while on them is never a good idea- its actually horrible or so I felt!
The fact that you're on them in the first place suggests you should probably be taking it easy anyway :p

Only take them if there is no other way of clearing it out of your system

Antbiotics destroy your system, make sure you load up on probiotics from the chemist with them.

Interesting theory from the Danone Activia school of microbiology.

I agree with the previous poster who said that whatever infection you're suffering from will probably inhibit your performance more than the antibiotics will.

    Lol.

I've run on antibiotics that I had for a gum infection before. I felt fine although the infection only really started to heal after took a break from the running.

I always use a rule: 2 weeks to flush out/recover after finishing antibiotics, though a medic friend says it takes 48 hours - never bought into that though.

Take some of these biotic foods and cranberry juice. Health food stores -fine if you want expensive items.

I always find myself feeling drained after an infection treated with antibiotics. Have raced shortly after finishing the antibiotics course, but was always washed out and unhappy with my performance.

I was taking antibiotics last year for a gum infection and they gave me the trots which did not making for a pleasant running experience :(

I learned my lesson and if I'm on antibiotics again I'm taking it easy until I'm feeling better.

Hmmm. Is there a link between running and gum infections. I might look for some research funding...

Thats mad, I was at the dentist yesterday & he told me, my recurring sinusitis was caused from a bad wisdom tooth & running will aggravate it even more.

lol, and I was only joking. Maybe there is something to it.

Sounds like a great idea. Its exactly what i have. I have had it for a while now and even went to the doc asthought it was a virus. going to get a tooth out nxt wednesday so have decided to stroll around. A min slower than marathon pace should be easy or just pace a girl so i cant run any faster that i know.

Thanks for all the advise. With Berlin 5 weeks away i cant afford a week or two of but its the only way it will clear.

Antibiotics over a long term or course can cause more problems than they cure. It did a lot of damage to my system. Never the same after it either.
Over a very short term though should be ok.

We're going off topic here on A/R/T but do you suggest these guys let their dental infections/sinusitis go out of control untreated by antibiotics. Perhaps you would suggest a few pots of yoghurt would cure them?

I think the benefits of antibiotics MASSIVELY outweigh their occassional side effects. At least we're not dying of untreated abscesses/TB(for the most part)/cellulitis anymore (in this part of the world).

Long term antibiotics are unusual and people would probably be prescribed an antifungal at the same time to prevent thrush. (ASFAIK)

Obviously antibiotics over a short period are fine. but I think you are getting mixed up with thrush and systematic candida my friend. Yogurts with probiotics are full of sugar and actually feed the bacteria.

obviously you have never had an issue with antibiotics or researched it. Perhaps you should.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,332 ✭✭✭earlyevening

I thought your yoghurt idea was that it fed the "good" bacteria in the gut and prevented the "bad" bacteria and candida taking over.

You're right though, I've never had an issue w antibiotics. I still dont believe they "destroy your system". I've done limited research and still reckon they're not as bad as you make out.

    Are you running tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭violator13

Candida lives on sugar so yougurts or any form of sugar/yeast including fruit sugar is a nono. But its a long course of antibiotics that does the damage.

Yeah giving it a lash tomr.U?

So I am on a course of antibiotics since Saturday for a throat infection. I will be finished them tonight. I have a 1/2 marathon on Sunday. That give me 84 hrs to recover to the race. Do you think it's long enough and what have your experiences been with this sort of break between antibiotics and race. I have been taking to try and get over this :
    Vit C
    Canberry Juice
    echinacea
    Manuka honey
    acidophilus
    raw garlic
cajun spice to gargle with water

There used to be a rule on this forum that medical advice should not be given. My advice to you is to take your doctor's advice. But since you ask, as a runner who had two lots of antibiotics last year, I would say that you need to recover from the infection properly. You have been unwell. Do you really think that you will be able to run at your best?

I'll just tell you about my experience and let you make up your own mind. I get regular chest infections which never clear without antibiotics. Twice this year I have had to take 2 courses to get rid of a single infection.

I raced the half last week on the 2nd or 3rd day of a ten day course (having finished a 5 day course a week previous) and was absolutely fine. At my best, probably not. Always feel a big improvement after 2-3 days though.

In terms of them 'destroying your system', I'd be dead without them so that's an easy choice.

As I am on antibiotics I got medial advise professional to be on them. I am just wondering on people experience on recovery after them is all. Thanks cwgatling

No bother. Fire a bottle of Jameson into the mix there and you are in PB territory ;)

hi rom, was in the very same prediciment a few weeks ago & came across this old thread & was trying to decide ,myself what to do.

i had started on antiboics and felt ok but erred on the side of caution and didn't do the race, went for a hard tempo session myself & found it v difficult, glad i didn't race. took me a few weeks to get back. I went on 2 courses of antibotics, the 2nd was strong, i also took udo's choice super 8 after wards. not sure if they made a difference but some people ave about them.

so i'd say it varies from person to person, depends on strength of antibotics & the pace your running at, it was when i tried to up the pace for 10km that i found myself lacking, you doing a 10km or a half?

I ran the national half marathon a couple of weeks back doped up to the eyeballs on antibiotics and asprin. Race went very well I thought.
