Not sure why this occured to me today but it did, some branches of christianity are against gambling - not sure which ones or if it is just frowned upon or considered a sin. Insurance is gambling - is it considered a no no by any christians to work in the business, I'm just curious.

Insurance is actually social - many pay in so that the few may claim - even fewer start out their insurance with the expectation of making a claim.

Insurance also provides a protection to society in general by its operation - nobody could dissaprove...

In gambling many pay in for the benefit of few winners but all expect to get something out of it!!

Nice one. Sorry Garda Murphy, its against my religion. Could you work on tax now MJ?

Seriously though, simply put, Insurance is not gambling.

I think you need to check the definition of gambling

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambling

Insurance is also for the benefit of 3rd parties...

Not having insurance would seem more of a gamble to me.

What about working in insurance - the moral implications of denying claims to increase your profit margin?

As for gambling, this is based on making money in haste, I thought:
The faithful will abound with blessings,
but one who is in a hurry to be rich will not go unpunished.

Insurance isn't a means to make money in haste, neither is a lot of gambling. It depends what our motives are.

Well, I'm sure that the insurance companies would disagree with that assesment. They would probably say something like, "we enter into contracts with a clinents and hedge against an accident befaling these clients or their properties based on the statistical likelihood of a given event occuring".
