From Postgraduate Diploma to Masters degree?

Does anyone know how it works? Let's take, for instance, Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and MSc in Finance. Each of which is full-time course and takes one year. Both have very similar programme. If you finish Postgraduate Diploma in Finance (and for whatever reason not MSc in Finance), is it possible to replenish degree to MSc (by, for example, dissertation or research) or does it have to be another one year taken for MSc in Finance?

My impression of the Pg.Dip was it was a conversion course, lets say you did Science and decided you wanted to do Business. Instead the Masters seemed to be for more "relevant" backgrounds to continue on.

As far as I know that setup works for the Marketing masters in DIT, where Business students are not allowed into it as its a conversion course.

    Edit:
The programme also acts as a qualifier for postgraduate programmes at Masters level in Finance and allied disciplines.

As it acts as a qualifier, you would be better off contacting DIT to see what the requirements to getting the MSc are. I am guessing that you will have to complete the full masters.

I've also applied for MSc in Marketing in DIT, just in case if didn't get accepted to the other courses I've chosen; I was refused, because my BA is in Marketing and Management. It's fine to me, because as I said, that was just-in-case course, and I've already got an offer for Postgraduate Diploma in Finance.

I definitely will. As far as I know, there's a course in UCD which works as a qualifier for MSc in Economics. It's not even a Postgraduate Diploma and students who finish that course must do a whole year of MSc in Economics anyway, if they continue to study.
